All the students appear to master using apostrophes correctly when we are doing it together as a class. But once they are turned loose on their own, creating their own stories, the use of their apostrophes confounds me! Placing apostrophes is not rocket science. There are only certain times when an apostrophe is needed. There are many adults on social media that apparently have no clue on how to use an apostrophe either. Their posts may say the most profound things I have ever read, but I totally ignore them and focus on the oblivious way they use their apostrophes. Lets take a look when an apostrophe is needed and when one is not needed at all. Apostrophes Showing Possession Apostrophes can show that something belongs to someone or even something. Lets look at a few examples below for singular nouns and names. The cars door was dented on the side. Dustys clothes were much too small and tight. The dogs food dish was almost empty. As he spoke, Deans arms flew around excitedly. Those examples show a very common and simple way of using apostrophes correctly. Two of the sentences show people that own things, whether it be clothes or body parts. One sentence showed an animal owning a dish. The other sentence is written about something (a car) and how part of it is damaged. What do all of these things have in common? They are all nouns! The people are proper nouns since we are using their names. The car and dog are just ordinary nouns. But the apostrophe shows that they have ownership of other nouns! Everything involved is a noun! Quite a few of my students become confused when a persons name ends with an s. They try to just put the apostrophe right before that s and call it all good. Below are some examples of what should be done with names that end in s and are showing possession of something. Guss thumb was broken during the football game. Thomass son was tall and skinny just like he was. The boy joined Chriss family for the camping trip. Casss hair was braided into lovely ponytails. What do all those examples have in common again? They are all nouns showing possession of other nouns! More specifically, they are all singular nouns showing ownership. So far, using apostrophes is pretty simple! However, it is about to become a bit more difficult. Plural nouns, as all of us know, just means that there is more than one of something. There are a few example sentences down below. The boys ran down to the creek to go swimming. When they got there, they noticed the creek was filled with frogs. The boys picked up the frogs and placed them in buckets. Nothing too difficult so far. Everything bolded in those three sentences are plural nouns. Now lets take a look at plural nouns that are also possessive, so an apostrophe will have to be used. The three girls lemonade stand was doing great business! All the families yards on our block was filled with debris from the tornado. The horses stables all had to be washed out and cleaned. Notice how the word is still a plural noun, but since they are also showing possession of something, they are actually possessive plural nouns. When dealing with a plural noun that ends in s and that is showing ownership of something, all that needs to be done is placing an apostrophe after the s at the end of the word. I know what you are saying though. You are thinking to yourself that not all plural nouns end in s, so what happens then. Where does the apostrophe end up going? Quickly look at the examples down below. It really is quite easy. The childrens dog ran out of the open gate. The womens dresses were all the same color. The mices home was a hole in the wall. Notice that first we made these words plural nouns that dont end in s. We next had to figure out how to make them plural possessive nouns correctly. Contractions I had my primary students one time do a quick Google search for contractions when they were struggling with the concept. They struggled a bit more when the top information that popped up was about women giving birth to babies. Not the information I was after.  A contraction is also a word created by the shortening and combining of two other words.  When making the contraction, an apostrophe has to be inserted to indicate there are missing letters. That is not quite always the case, but it is the majority of the time. I have saved the most confusing use of an apostrophe for last. It can make very intelligent adults look less than intelligent on their social media posts. It will have so many hands raised up in the air when presented to a primary classroom. But I thought you said I know! I didnt create the English language. I dont understand it either. Deciding when to use its or its is not too complicated once you hear the rules, but until then I have seen people choose heads or tails on which one they were going to go with. Only use its  when creating a contraction of it is or it has. Below are examples for a better understanding. Its extremely cold out today. Its time to go shopping since we are all out of food. Use its the rest of the time when you are not forming a contraction by combining two words. The elephant swayed its trunk back and forth. The toy came with its own batteries. You may look at that first sentence about the elephant and say that its trunk should be its trunk because it is showing ownership of the trunk. However, that is not the case. Remember, only use its when you are combining it is or  it has. I know, I know. I dont make the rules, I just enforce them! Just by reading all of this you have become an apostrophe expert! Emilie du Chatelet Emilie du Chatelet grew up in a society where there were not many education opportunities for women. She was born in Paris on December 17, 1706 and grew up in a household where marriage was the only way one could improve their place in society. During her early childhood, Emilie began to show such promise in the area of academics that soon she was able to convince her father that she was a genius who needed attention. Provided with good education, she studied and soon mastered Latin, Italian and English. She also studied Tasso, Virgil, Milton and other great scholars of the time. In spite of her talents in the area of languages, her true love was mathematics. Her study in this area was encouraged be a family friend, M. de Mezieres, who recognized her talent. Emilie's work in mathematics was rarely original or as captivating as that of other female mathematicians but it was substantive. At the age of nineteen she married Marquis du Chatelet. During the first two years of their marriage, Emilie gave birth to a boy and a girl, and later at the age of 27 the birth of another son followed. Neither the children or her husband deterred her from fully grasping and indulging in the social life of the court. Some of Emilie's most significant work came from the period she spent with Voltaire, one of the most intriguing and brilliant scholars of this time, at Cirey-sur-Blaise. For the two scholars this was a safe and quiet place distant from the turbulence of Paris and court life. She started studying the works of Leibniz but she then started to analyze the discoveries of Newton. She was extremely success in translating his whole book on the principals of mathematics into French. She also added to this book an "Algebraical Commentary" which very few general readers understood. What are schools doing for us? If nothing then what can we do to improve them? I think they aren’t doing anything. I have never really thought about this idea until I started research. I think that I am fairly smart, but it is more of after school rather than school itself. I was watching a TED TALK from Ken Robinson and he was talking about how schools kill creativity. He talks about how schools are good at making people who do their jobs successfully. He also says that those same people are doing that job because they don’t have any other choice. By showing this he is trying to show that school kills creativity. Salman Khan the founder of Khan Academy talks about how students don’t get to work on their own pace. Dave Eggers the founder of 826 Valencia talks about how students need 1-1 attention to learn their talents. Ken Robinson has many different videos on school all talking about how school has problems that need to be solved. The one that I watched was â€Å"Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity†. He talks about how school trains you in a way that creates a fear of making mistakes. He says, â€Å"If you’re not prepared to be wrong, then you will never be original†. We are being educated out of creativity. Teachers are not ready to have things be wrong. When grading test or any kind of work there is no such thing as maybe, it is just right or wrong. There are always those kids who are over the top smart and there are those kids that are very creative but not as smart. In this scenario you know that the kid who has the brains is going to get the popularity. Nobody is going to go to the creative kid for help even though he/she might have something worth saying. Then those creative kids will also have to adapt to the school system and eventually lose their creativity. In that learning system they want you to master different concepts that you are having trouble with. So they show you videos on how to do the problem then set you on your own. If you still don’t have perfection then they allow you to repeat. They want you to master the concept by letting you do the whole process as many times as you like. By this you are allowed to learn at your own pace. In school you learn a chapter take a test then move on. Even if you didn’t understand you move on, also the students who get like 90 to 99.9% they still might have some problems that they didn’t understand. I also experienced Khan Academy, I have an account and I am always using it when I need help on something. Dave Eggers has one video on TED and it talks about why students are happier to go to tutoring rather than school itself. In his TED TALK â€Å"Once Upon a School† he shows the audience of a place that he created called 826 Valencia. This is a shop that he founded in which he connected a newspaper editor center, a pirate shop, and a after school tutoring center. He says that students come there running after school to do homework. That’s not really something that you think of. The students get help on any HW especially their English homework. He has his Newspaper crew and volunteers help students 1-1 on HW. He has students write books and then publishes the books. He says that students need 1-1 time with whomever they are working with. In school students don’t really get 1-1 time during school to talk about things that they are having trouble with and stuff like that. In a year he has over 1,400 volunteers helping run 826 Valencia. He thinks that if students are able to have 1-1 time with teachers on their work then they would be more creative. They students would never know if they were doing well or if they needed to improve in certain areas. If you haven’t watched this TED TALK them I recommend every one the watch it. All three of these guys show great ways to improve the School system. These guys are already doing it outside of school, which shows that our School System isn’t really great.
